Call for Papers – International Conference on Accessible Intersemiotic Translation (ICAIT), 31st March-1st April, 2022

The Università degli Studi di Parma invites submissions of abstracts (20 minutes for presentation, to be followed by 10 minutes for questions) to be scheduled in parallel sessions of the International Conference on Accessible Intersemiotic Translation, which will be held in Parma, Italia, from March 31st to April 1st, 2022.

Conference Theme

Access to the media and cultural content is a recognized right of all citizens, regardless of their physical conditions. New concepts have been developed since the end of the 20th century to respond to certain problems related to disability, such as ‘Design for All’ or ‘Universal Accessibility’.  If at first the effort has been focused on the elimination of physical barriers, it has not been so evident when it has been a question of acting on those that refer to communication.  In fact, people with hearing, visual and cognitive disabilities were left out of many audiovisual contents, for example. In the last years of the 20th century, Audiovisual Translation began to increase a large space in the so-called Translation Studies. On the one hand, these are contents whose meaning is constructed through to a multiplicity of codes, that is, they are multimodal texts; on the other hand, its focus is on the transmission of these contents to people with sensorial disabilities.  Accessibility to cultural products (cinema, architecture, natural spaces, art in general) is carried out within the framework of intersemiotic translation. It is clear that collaboration between experts from different disciplines is necessary for a greater and better understanding the object of study.

This congress seeks to give visibility to the theoretical and practical development of Accessible Intersemiotic Translation. It aims to provide a space for discussions on theoretical and practical issues related to accessibility to cultural heritage. On the other hand, with this meeting we aim to open up interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers working in this field.

All abstracts should include the name, institutional affiliation and email address of the author(s), the paper title, and four-five keywords. The abstract should be approximately 750 words in length. All abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the conference scientific committee according to the following criteria: originality and/or importance of topic; clarity of research question and purpose; data sources; theoretical approach; analytical focus; relevance of findings if already available. We especially encourage abstract submissions from early-career researchers, including postgraduate research students and postdoctoral researchers.
