Introduction to PluriTAV

We live in an increasingly globalized and multilingual society. This fact, together with the international importance of English, the rise of multilingual situations in work and academic environments and the need to improve proficiency in foreign languages (FL) stand as a clear challenge to improve multilingual competence (or skills). Language teaching must continue offering new interdisciplinary perspectives for the learning of foreign languages and the improvement of one’s own language. In this line of thinking, the current project intends to explore new approaches from related fields and new tools that will allow expansion and improvement of linguistic knowledge.

This project is based on one of the most recent approaches to FL teaching, the multilingual approach, in which not only the language being studied (or taught) is being taken into account, but also the linguistic environment of the classroom. The project, focused on the teaching and improvement of languages, is based on said approach and draws on a field related to FL teaching: audiovisual translation (AVT). The ultimate aims are to learn a foreign language, to improve on mother tongue abilities and to develop the plurilingual competence.

PLURITAV is a learning platform for English, Spanish and Catalan, based on a multilingual approach and aimed at teachers and students. One of its distinctive features is the exploitation of the different AVT modes for the teaching and learning of languages, with CEFR and MAREP as guides. The website contains multimedia content and has been created in the three languages of this project, i.e. English, Spanish, and Catalan.

Unlike other projects that have also looked into the synergies between AVT and language teaching, this project has adopted a multilingual approach to evaluate the impact that AVT has on the languages involved in the linguistic exchange and, in particular, to explore the influence that the interlingual transfer that happens in translation can exert on the plurilingual competence of students.
